Novus Ordo Seclorum
Terrifying gamers since 1985!
"All your case are
now belong to us"
"That is not dead which can eternal lie. And with strange aeons even death may die." The setting of Call of Cthulhu is a darker version of our world, based on H.P. Lovecraft's observation that, "The oldest and strongest emotion of mankind is fear, and the strongest kind of fear is fear of the unknown."
Novus Ordo Seclorum is Call of Cthulhu roleplaying game tournament adventure writing cult dedicated to terrifying gamers since 1985!
In the roleplaying game Call of Cthulhu the players take the roles of ordinary people, drawn into the realm of the mysterious: detectives, criminals, scholars, artists, war veterans, etc. Often, happenings begin innocently enough, until more and more of the workings behind the scenes are revealed. As the characters learn more of the true horrors of the world and the irrelevance of humanity, their sanity inevitably withers away (the game actually includes a mechanism for determining how damaged a character's sanity is at any given point). To access the tools they need to defeat the horrors - mystic knowledge and magic - the characters must be willing to give up some of their sanity for the greater good. A Novus Ordo Seclorum round of Call of Cthulhu has a reputation of being a game in which it is quite common for a player character to die in gruesome circumstances or end up in a mental institution.

Novus at NeonCon
Las Vegas, Nevada
Oct. 12-14, 2007
Vegas. Sin City. What says gaming more than Vegas? Novus presented four Cthulhu events at NeonCon, held in the Circus Circus in Las Vegas. NeonCon is a new local con run by loyal NOS Brethren Mike Sanchez and Doug... [seem to have lost your last name, there Doug--sorry!] The con was small, but very entertaining. Vegas is definitely a good place for a gaming convention: you can always get a beer no matter what time your round ends!
And late-night gaming is never a problem!
Novus was represented by Tony who ran his "Hooch" round (NOS initial 2006), as well as revisiting the strange town of Davy, West Virginia (the 2007 CMT initial round). Don presented his soon-to-be legendary "Superstition" (the
2006 NOS SF), as well as "The Western Land" (2005 NOS SF). Those of you who played in either of these rounds will recognize the Vegas connection! We had a full turnout for all four rounds, thanks in part to some cold pimpin'
by the con organizers. I would estimate that half our players were new to Cthulhu, so considering the unusual and challenging nature of these rounds, they received quite a baptism! Overall, the players were outstanding. They did a very credible job with some difficult scenarios. Fun was had by all!
One of the highlight of the con occurred at an obscure nameless casino bar at Circus Circus, Sunday morning, local time: 4:00 AM. Tony, me, and new NOS Acolyte Michael are sitting around enjoying some beverages. The topic of discussion: psychological tricks and metagame tactics that game masters can use at convention games to illicit emotional responses from players.
I'm not at liberty to divulge any details (nor can I confirm or deny that the use of physical torture was invoked), but let's just say it was a robust debate. A big, youngish guy comes up to us and politely joins our conversation, noting that he was a US Marine on leave from Iraq. He added a unique perspective to our discussion, although I'm not exactly sure he understood that we were talking about role-playing. It matters little, oh loyal cultists! For you shall enjoy the fruits of our labor.
In closing, I would heartily recommend NeonCon 2008 for a good time. I'm sure Doug and Mike will keep us apprised on the dates. I have a sneaking suspicion that Novus may be in the house once again, perhaps with an expanded lineup. If you've never been to Vegas, the Circus Circus will show you a "lower" strata of Vegas vacationing. It's hardly the fanciest hotel/casino on the Strip, in fact, it's probably near the bottom, but for the purposes of a gaming convention, it was terrific! The hotel staff was great. The convention occupied the entire business center, which was located directly below one of the hotel towers. The casino and restaurant/shopping concourse were adjacent. Overall, the Circus Circus was very convenient and affordable-- more money to wager!
